The airbag system serves to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers in addition to seat belts. The airbags cannot provide the desired effect if the seat belts are not fastened properly.
Precautions related to the airbag system and seat belt pretensioners (SRS)
Do not use equipment to diagnose the electrical circuits of the SRS system, unless specified in this manual.
Before servicing the SRS system components, turn off the ignition, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and wait at least one minute.
The airbags and seat belt pretensioners may deploy for up to three minutes after the wire has been disconnected. Do not touch the connectors of any SRS system components for at least three minutes after the wire has been disconnected from the battery.
For correct orientation, the diagnostic sensors must be installed so that the arrows point towards the front of the vehicle. In addition, the body of the diagnostic sensor must be inspected for cracks, signs of deformation or rust and replaced if necessary.
The contact disk must be set to the position corresponding to the neutral position of the steering wheel, since the free play of the wire is limited. Do not turn the steering wheel if the steering gear has been removed.
Handle airbag modules with care. Always lay the front airbag modules in such a way that the part with the decorative trim is facing outward. The side cushion modules must be laid with the stud portion facing down.
After performing any operations related to the replacement of any components of the SRS system, it is necessary to perform a health check of the entire system.
After the front airbag has deployed, if the instrument panel is damaged, it must be replaced as an assembly.
The instrument panel must be replaced if the front passenger airbag deploys.
Disposal, reuse, and transportation of airbag modules and pretensioners must comply with federal, state, and local laws.
Attention. Always place the airbag module with the facing up.
Attention.
- Before servicing the airbag system, turn off the ignition and disconnect both battery wires, then wait at least one minute.
- Do not attempt to repair or replace damaged airbag system connectors. If the driver's airbag module connector is damaged, the contact disc must be replaced with a new one.
- Do not insert foreign objects (e.g. a screwdriver) into the airbag module or wire connectors.
- Do not disassemble the airbag module.
- Do not allow the airbag module to reach temperatures above 90°C.
- Replace the airbag module with a new one if it has been hit or dropped.
- Do not allow oil, grease or water to come into contact with the airbag module.
- When handling airbag modules, keep them facing away from you. Otherwise, there is a risk of serious injury due to accidental deployment of the airbag.
