There are many engine overhaul options. The decision to replace the engine block, piston/rod assemblies and crankshaft depends on a number of factors, the most important of which is the condition of the block. Other factors are cost, access to machine shop facilities, availability of spare parts, time.
Some of the recovery options:
Individual parts - If the inspection procedures show that the engine block and most of the components are in such a condition that they can be reused, purchasing individual spare parts may be the most cost effective. The block, crankshaft and piston/connecting rod assemblies must be carefully inspected. Even if the block is worn slightly, the cylinder bores must be honed.
crankshaft kit - installation of a polished crankshaft and a coordinated set of pistons and connecting rods. The pistons are mounted on the connecting rods. The kit includes piston rings and necessary bearings. These kits are commonly available in standard and range overhaul cylinder bore sizes.
short block- the short block consists of the engine block with the crankshaft and piston/rod assemblies already installed. All new bearings are installed and all clearances will be correct. The camshaft, valve components, cylinder head and external parts can be bolted together.
long block - The long block consists of the short block plus the oil pump, sump, cylinder head, valve cover, camshaft and valve components, sprockets and belt, and timing belt cover. All components are installed with new bearings, seals and gaskets. It is necessary to install manifolds and external parts.
Consider which option is best for you and discuss this with the workshop before purchasing replacement parts.
