Removing
Remove the camshaft timing belt covers.
Pic. 3.2. When installing the piston of the first cylinder at TDC, the marks must be aligned (A) on the crankshaft pulley and front cover, as well as the mark «A» on the camshaft pulley with a mark (b) on the rear toothed belt cover
Turn out the spark plugs and turn the crankshaft with a key by the head of the pulley mounting bolt until the mark on the pulley aligns with the mark «TDC» (0°) on the scale pointer and marks «A» (for 2.0 l engine) on the camshaft pulley with a mark on the rear casing (pic. 3.2). On a 1.6 liter engine, a mark is combined with a mark on the casing «IN» on the pulley.
Loosen the bolts and remove the crankshaft drive belt pulley from the toothed belt pulley. Due to the lack of space, it is difficult to remove the pulley from the vehicle, but this is not necessary for the procedure in question. It is only necessary to remove the drive belt pulley from the toothed belt pulley.
Attention! If the belt will be used in the future, then before loosening the belt, mark the direction of rotation with an arrow.
Loosen the belt tensioner fixing bolt.
Remove the belt from the pulleys.
Examine the belt. Replace it with a new one if any of the following damage is present: tears, delaminations, wear, cracks, hardening, kinks, traces of oil or other liquids. The belt should also be replaced when the resource set by the instruction is exhausted.
Installation
Make sure the pulley marks on the crankshaft and camshaft are aligned (see fig. 3.2).
Pic. 3.3. Before installing the toothed belt, stretch the spring as much as possible in the direction of the arrow, then, without applying much force, tighten the lock bolt
Hook the spring onto the tensioner and retract the tensioner with maximum force. Tighten the tensioner bolt until it is in the position shown in fig. 3.3.
Pic. 3.4. Branch (1) toothed belt, from which it is necessary to start installing the toothed belt
Slide the belt over the drive and driven pulleys from the side opposite the water pump and tensioner, as this provides the required belt tension (pic. 3.4). If an old belt is being installed, make sure that the direction of the pre-marked arrow matches the direction of rotation of the belt.
Tension adjustment
Loosen the tensioner lock bolt, while the force on the belt is transmitted only from the spring.
Pic. 3.5. Direction (A) toothed belt rotation and place (IN) deflection measurements when checking its tension
Rotate the crankshaft two turns clockwise (at the same time, equal forces are applied on both sides of the belt), then tighten the locking bolt (pic. 3.5).
Check that the timing belt pulley marks are correctly aligned.
Check the belt tension by pressing in the middle between the drive and driven pulleys from the outside. Measure the deflection and compare it with the specification given in the technical data.
If the tension does not match this value, repeat the operations to tension it.
Install the belt guards, crankshaft pulley and spark plugs.
