Electronic control unit for the airbag system (indicated by an arrow).
The additional passive safety system consists of an electronic control unit, two collision sensors and airbag modules.
How the system works
In order for the airbags to inflate, the ECM must receive signals from one or both of the collision sensors and the safety sensor.
Self-diagnosis system
If a malfunction is detected, the electronic control unit turns on a warning light on the instrument panel. In this case, you should immediately contact a specialist.
Maintenance of elements located near the elements of the airbag system
Sometimes, it may be necessary to remove the steering wheel, radio, or other item near the instrument panel. The wires of the airbag system are easy to identify as they have bright yellow insulation. Never disconnect the connectors or use electrical testers to test the airbag system. Always deactivate the airbag system before carrying out repairs near its components.
Deactivating the airbag system
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then disconnect the positive battery cable and wait a few minutes.
2. Disconnect the airbag module connector.
Activating the airbag system
1. Connect the air bag module connector.
2. Connect battery wires.
