Location of gearbox and engine bolts (1993 and up 6-cylinder models with 4EAT/GF4A-EL transmission)
Location of gearbox and engine bolts (1994 and up 4-cylinder models with 4EAT/GF4A-EL transmission)
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the battery and its bracket.
2. Remove the air intake duct and air filter.
3. Remove the starter.
4. Disconnect the transmission ground wire and remove the transmission sensor.
5. Disconnect the transmission wiring harness from the transmission housing.
6. Disconnect the shift lever cable from the transmission.
7. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor wire.
8. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler pipes from the transmission.
9. Raise and secure the front of the vehicle. Secure the engine to a brace mounted above the engine compartment.
10. Remove the upper bolts securing the gearbox to the engine (arrows).
11. Disconnect the fuel filter bracket and move the filter to the side.
12. Remove the left engine mount.
13. Remove the front wheels.
14. Drain the transmission fluid.
15. On four-cylinder engines, remove the intake manifold support bracket.
16. In six-cylinder engines, remove the exhaust system.
17. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the gearbox.
18. Remove the drive shafts and intermediate shaft.
19. Insert bushings or special plugs into the holes of the axle shafts.
20. Remove protective shields. Remove the transaxle cross member by unscrewing the bolts (arrows).
21. In six-cylinder engines, disconnect the wires of the left and right oxygen sensors.
22. Remove six bolts, twist two nuts and remove the gearbox support (A - bolts securing the engine to the support; B - bolts securing the support to the body; C - bolts securing the gearbox to the support).
23. Tighten the torque converter nuts.
24. Install a jack under the gearbox.
25. Remove the transmission support and support bracket.
26. Remove the remaining gearbox and engine bolts.
27. Disconnect the gearbox from the engine and lower it on a jack.
Installation
The gearbox is installed in the reverse order of removal.
