Attention! All models described in this manual are equipped with airbags. Always deactivate airbag units before working in close proximity to airbags (see chapter 12).
Removing
1. Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are in a straight ahead position.
2. Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the cable from the positive battery terminal and wait at least 2 minutes before continuing to work.
Warning, If your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft radio, make sure you have the day code to unlock it before disconnecting the battery.
3. Turn out four bolts of fastening of the block of an airbag from the back party of a steering wheel (pic. 14.3).
4. Disconnect the connector from the pillow block (fig 14.4), by deploying and holding the airbag unit. Also, disconnect the system connector "cruise control" (if it exists).
5. Remove the airbag unit from the steering wheel.
Attention! Handle the airbag unit very carefully and store it in a safe place.
6. Turn away a nut of fastening of a steering wheel, then note position of a steering wheel concerning a shaft (pic. 14.6).
7. A puller is required to remove the steering wheel from the shaft (pic. 14.7). When removing the steering wheel, make sure that the airbag and system wiring "cruise control" not caught on the steering wheel.
Warning. Do not rotate the steering shaft with the steering wheel removed.
8. Tape the coil spring to keep it from moving (pic. 14.8).
Installation
9. Make sure the coil spring is centered, i.e. its mark is facing up. If you did not rotate the steering shaft when the steering wheel was removed, the spring will remain centered. In the event that you rotated the shaft with the steering wheel removed, you must center the coil spring as follows:
- A) Turn the spring clockwise until it stops.
- b) Turn the spring counterclockwise about 2 and 3/4 turns so that the mark is facing up.
10. Thread the airbag and system wiring "cruise control" through the steering wheel, then put the steering wheel on the shaft, aligning the marks made before removal.
11. Screw a nut of fastening of a steering wheel and tighten it the demanded moment.
12. Connect the airbag and system connectors "cruise control" (if it exists). Reinstall the airbag unit and tighten its mounting bolts to the specified torque.
13. To check the airbag unit, turn on the ignition. The warning light on the dashboard should come on "AIR BAG" and go out after about 7 seconds.
