4 speed automatic transmission (pic. 12) has electronic control. Transmissions with automatic transmission are available in two versions: 4EAT and CD4E. All models produced in 1993 (with automatic transmission) equipped with a 4EAT transmission. Since 1994, the CD4E transmission has been installed on the 4-cylinder engine models, and the 4EAT transmission on the V-engine models. The transmission type is stamped on a plate affixed to the transmission case.
Note. This transmission marking is used only by Ford. Mazda uses its own equivalent designations: instead of 4EAT and CD4E-GF4A and LA4A-EL, respectively. Keep this in mind when ordering spare parts.
The 4EAT/GF4A transmission is a pure planetary transmission, while the CD4EZ/LA4A-EL transmission has a chain-driven planetary gearbox and conventional differential. In both transmissions, the gears are shifted using solenoid valves controlled by an electronic control unit. All solenoid valves are installed in the valve box.
Because automatic transmission repairs require special equipment and tools, this chapter only covers troubleshooting, maintenance, adjustment, and removal and installation procedures.
If a major overhaul of the transmission is required, contact a specialized service station. To reduce repair costs, you can remove and install the transmission yourself.
