Removing and installing / checking the coolant temperature sensor

The coolant temperature sensor should be checked if a cold engine is hard to start or runs intermittently. The coolant temperature sensor is located, depending on the year of manufacture and engine, either on the back of the engine or in the intake manifold.

Removing

1. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor connector.

2. Unscrew the temperature sensor. Substitute a clean vessel and collect the escaping coolant.

Examination

1. Hang the temperature sensor in a container of water and slowly heat the water.

2. Measure the resistance of the temperature sensor with an ohmmeter. To do this, connect one terminal of the ohmmeter to the housing, the other terminal of the ohmmeter to the sensor terminal.

Installation

1. Install the temperature sensor with new gasket and screw firmly 25 Nm.

2. Fill in coolant.

3. Warm up the engine and leave to idle until the radiator fan turns on. Check the coolant level again.
