Removing
1. Remove the cylinder head, see Section Removal and installation of the cylinder head / replacement of the cylinder head gasket.
2. Remove the camshaft, see Sections Removal and installation of the camshaft / adjustment of the valve timing, Removal and installation of a camshaft, Camshaft/timing drive.
Attention! If the parts of the timing mechanism are to be installed again, they must be installed in their original places. To avoid confusion, it is recommended to prepare a suitable layout board.
3. Engines with 2 overhead camshafts: Take out the poppet pushers and lay them out on the board.
4. Remove valve springs. Valve cotters are removed using standard valve spring pliers.
5. Compress the valve springs and remove the crackers. Remove forceps. Take out the valve. Remove upper valve cups, springs and bottom cups.
6. Remove the oil seals, see Section Replacement of oil seals.
Installation
1. If old valves and cylinder head will be installed, the valve guides should be checked before assembly. If new valves are installed in an old cylinder head, the valve faces in the cylinder head and the valves themselves must be machined.
2. Clean the valves with a scraper and a wire brush to remove carbon deposits.
3. Engine B3, B5, B6 (SOHC), VR (SOHC): Check rocker arms and rocker shaft for grooves and wear.
4. Lightly grease the valve stem and insert each valve into its original location. New valves must first be lapped with grinding paste, see Section Checking/adjusting valve clearance.
5. Thoroughly clean all parts and lubricate moving parts with engine oil.
6. Required replace oil caps.
7. Insert the valves into the cylinder head. Make sure the intake and exhaust valves are installed in the correct order.
8. Insert the lower cups of the valve springs.
9. Install the valve springs and upper cups.
10. Compress the valve springs with pliers and insert the valve cotters so that they fit into the valve grooves. Remove the pliers and install the rest of the valves.
11. Tap the valve stem lightly with a resin mallet to ensure that the cotter pins are in the correct position.
12. Engines with 2 overhead camshafts: Lubricate all poppet tappets with engine oil and insert them into their respective holes.
13. Install camshaft, see Sections Removal and installation of a camshaft, Camshaft/timing drive, Camshaft/timing drive.
14. Replace the cylinder head gasket, install the cylinder head, see Section Removal and installation of the cylinder head / replacement of the cylinder head gasket.
15. Adjust valve clearance, see Section Checking/adjusting valve clearance.
