The number of the selected gear is lit on the dashboard (pic. 1.159).
If downshifting is not possible due to vehicle speed being too high, the gear indicator will blink twice to alert the driver that downshifting is currently not possible.
When the working fluid is overheated (ATF) the automatic transmission can switch from manual to automatic mode. This cancels the manual mode and turns off the gear indicator. This is specifically designed to protect the automatic transmission from damage. After cooling the working fluid (ATF) the gear indicator light comes on again and the automatic transmission returns to manual shift mode.
