Tire designation example
195 - tire width in mm.
170 - ratio of height and width (tire profile height is 70% of the width).
If there is no indication of the ratio of height and width (e.g. 155 R 13), then we are talking about «normal» ratio of height and width. For radial tires, it is 82.
R - Radial tire design.
14 is the disc diameter in inches.
89 - tire load index.
Attention: If between the numbers 14 and 89 there is the designation M + S, then we are talking about winter tires.
H - index of permissible maximum speed H: up to 210 km / h
The speed index is behind the tire size designation. These indexes apply to both summer and winter tires.
Tire speed indices
Speed index | Permissible maximum speed |
Q | 160 km/h |
S | 180 km/h |
T | 190 km/h |
n | 210 km/h |
V | 240 km/h |
W | 270 km/h |
If the tire designation is followed by the word «reinforced», then this tire is reinforced.
Tire manufacturing date
The date of manufacture of the tire is marked on it in the form of a code.
Example: DOT CUL2 UM8 257 ◁ TUBELESS
DOT - Department of Transportation (Ministry of transportation).
CU is the abbreviation for the tire manufacturer. L2 - tire size.
UM8 - tire construction.
257 - date of manufacture (Week 25, 1997).
◁ - symbol of the decade from 1990 to 1999
Tubeless - tubeless (Tubetype - with camera)
Disk designation example: 5 Jx13
5 - wheel width in inches.
J - letter designation of the height and contour of the flange of the disc (B - low form of the rim).
X - designation of a one-piece deep rim.
13 is the disc diameter in inches.
