Checking the exhaust system for tightness

On vehicles with a catalytic converter, leaks in the exhaust system in front of the lambda probe can lead to the following damage:

Starting Difficulty: Engine stalls, rough idle. Works intermittently during acceleration. Test conditions: engine cold or warm.

Start the engine and check the exhaust system for tightness by plugging the exhaust pipe with a rag.

At the same time, the assistant should visually check all connecting flanges for the presence of escaping exhaust gases (hissing sound, the release of gases is felt by hand).

Spray the cylinder head/manifold and manifold/exhaust pipe connections with a leak detection compound and check for bubbles.

Eliminate tightness.
