The two overhead camshafts act on the valves through tappets with shims. Both camshafts are driven by a toothed belt. Valve clearance should be controlled only every 150 thousand km. The toothed belt tension is maintained by an automatic tensioner. The toothed belt must be replaced as part of the service after 150,000 km or 10 years of operation.
Since the right engine support must be unloaded, a hoist or hydraulic jack with wooden linings is necessary to hang the engine.
Remove V-belt (see later in this chapter).
With the ignition off, disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention: This will erase the data from the electronic memory blocks (see chapter «electrical equipment»).
Unscrew the filler cap and remove the cap (casing) engine by loosening the nuts. Screw the plug back in.
Remove spark plugs.
Loosen the four nuts and remove the valve cover (1). (2 - spark plug plug).
